چکیده

Abstract. Smectic liquid crystals are materials formed by stacking deformable, fluid layers. Though smectics prefer to have flat, uniformly-spaced layers, boundary conditions can impose curvature on the layers. Since the layer spacing and curvature are intertwined, the problem of finding minimal configurations for the layers becomes highly nontrivial. We discuss various topological and geometrical aspects of these materials and present recent progress on finding some exact layer configurations. We also exhibit connections to the study of certain embedded minimal surfaces and briefly summarize some important open problems.

Internal structure visualization and lithographic use of periodic toroidal holes in liquid crystals.

The formation of a large-area ordered structure by organic molecular soft building blocks is one of the most exciting interdisciplinary research areas in current materials science and nanotechnology. So far, several distinct organic building blocks--including colloids, block copolymers and surfactants--have been examined as potential materials for the creation of lithographic templates. Here, w...

Bond orientational order model for smectic B liquid crystals

2014 We show how recent theories of two dimensional melting can be carried over to provide natural order parameters for solid, smectic B, and smectic A phases of liquid crystals. Smectic B and other well-ordered smectic phases correspond to systems with bond orientational long range order and positional short range order in the plane of the smectic layers. The X-ray scattering predicted by this...

Evidence of anisotropic quenched disorder effects on a smectic liquid crystal confined in porous silicon.

We present a neutron scattering analysis of the structure of the smectic liquid crystal octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB) confined in one-dimensional nanopores of porous silicon films (PS). The smectic transition is completely suppressed, leading to the extension of a short-range ordered smectic phase aligned along the pore axis. It evolves reversibly over an extended temperature range, down to 50 K bel...

Organization of the polarization splay modulated smectic liquid crystal phase by topographic confinement.

Recently, the topographic patterning of surfaces by lithography and nanoimprinting has emerged as a new and powerful tool for producing single structural domains of liquid crystals and other soft materials. Here the use of surface topography is extended to the organization of liquid crystals of bent-core molecules, soft materials that, on the one hand, exhibit a rich, exciting, and intensely st...
